Firefox has become slower and slower, so i 'refreshed firefox', something i've done numerous times before, but this time it cleared out all my bookmarks and all my history. i even had to re-register at some sites like i'd never been there before. For a while after that, when i opened firefox, it would open other windows with ads for off-the-wall things. I'd close them, and it finally stopped doing that, but it still is very slow and sometimes just drops websites out of the blue. Just now i opened a game on newgrounds and the game gave me a message that this copy of firefox had a 'bug' in it and suggested i use internet explorer or another browser to play the game. I am not real great at this stuff and i would like advice as to what to do. Thanks

That all sounds like you have a dose fa Malware on that PC, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Dear the-edmister,

Yes, thank you, that helped quite a bit. I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes' Anti Malware and it said it removed 87 threats, but no malware. Afterwards things are still a little hard to load (some things have to be refreshed at least once) but at least they did load, and were a little quicker also. Can this be used with my normal anti-virus, (AVG)? I think i'll try switching to Microsoft Security Essentials for a little while and see how that works.
Thank you for your help, anything else i should know?

  Sincerely,

kkitten

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Normal anti-virus don't work on ad / wal-ware. Every now and then, run most or all of the mal-ware scanners. Each works differently. What one could miss, another may pick up.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

Thanks to everyone who replied, i will certainly put their suggestions to good use. I tried AdwCleaner also, but it was a little too technical for me, maybe i can figure it out later. I downloaded FEBE and will backup my bookmarks, thank you FredMcD and cor-el thank you too for the work arounds i will also try as they are needed. For now, i am ok with the way firefox has been acting, but it's nice to have all these things in my arsenal for emergencies. Thanks again to the-edmister! Sincerely, kkitten

Please add this program to your Firefox. SUMO Troubleshooter {web link} This will provide Firefox troubleshooting data to Mozilla web sites. No personal information is listed.

If you should have other issues, or this one comes back, please post as a new question. If you want, you can also post the link for the new post here so we can find it.

The troubleshooting extension is no longer used in the current Firefox release because there is a special API that is used when available.

Ignore the last two answer, Fred gave incorrect information and Cor-el was correcting him.
