Some sites cause a burst of new connections (tabs) up to 20-30

Some sites, when I click on something (images, links) begin to make new tabs\connections at an alarming and uncontrollable rate. As many as 20-30 or more. A few that I have viewed are ad-sites. It doesn't always happen right away. Sometimes it happens on one left click on one item, other times I may click several links before it occurs.

When the series of tabs finish popping up, they are easily removed in the normal way, or they can be viewed.

You get that problem if you select the Firefox program to handle a file when you get an "Open With" dialog.

Delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

If you click on something, it might have several links to it, and it's not sure if it wants to open all of them.
