I have just today set up sync on firefox as have bought a new laptop and want to sync all the settings and bookmarks etc on the new computer.

Unfortunately it's not recognizing my login on the new computer. Yes, I have verified the account. What to do?

Where did you come up with "pair a device" in Firefox? Pairing was was used in Firefox 28, over a year ago. A newer version of Sync has been in use since the end of April 2014 in Firefox 29+ versions.

Which version of Firefox are you / were you using on your existing device? If that device is still available to you, update your Sync account and then connect that new laptop to Sync. See this KB article - Sync your Firefox bookmarks, history, passwords and more

If you already have a new Sync account. see this to learn how to connect an additional device. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-set-up-firefox-sync#w_part-2-connect-additional-devices-to-firefox-sync
