Sometimes I accidently start answering an email without hitting reply button and it emties my unread messages. Can they be retrieved?
If I start typing an answer to a new message forget to hit reply first it empties my unread messages. Is there a way to retrieve them?

I'd hope they could be found in Trash or maybe Archives.
Thunderbird has several letter key shortcuts such as C to mark all messages as read, A to archive, and many more.
If you really can't break this habit, you might want to consider disabling the offending shortcuts. An addon named keyconfig would let you do this.
