Can I prevent duplicate bookmarks when importing from Chrome, or will firefox (latest version 7/19) prevent duplicates automatically?

I am evaluating firefox while still using chrome. I imported bookmarks when I first downloaded firefox and that went smoothly. Since then I have added new bookmarks (and passwords, but that is another story) to chrome. I want to get these bookmarks onto firefox, but am concerned that I will wind up getting a bunch of duplicate bookmarks when I import them. That could be a huge mess, since I have a ton of bookmarks. Ideally I could just import and firefox would recognize and prevent import of duplicates . . .

Hi whaz2007, I just did it with IE11 and got everything - in a new folder.

You can do that, then open Bookmarks Library, Ctrl+Shift+B, move the new bookmarks where you want and then delete the new folder.

"Import" for bookmarks will append any existing bookmarks; it doesn't check for duplicates.

As already mentioned, the newly "imported" bookmarks should appear in a separate folder labeled for the web browser they were imported from. In your case the folder would be named "(along the lines of) from Google Chrome.

Sorry, I don't have a solution to that dilemma - sort of saying to look for an add-on that would search for duplicates and offer a means to delet the duplicates once they are imported. I don't know if said add-on exists; never needed that type of add-on.

Firefox does prevent the user from saving a new bookmark that is identical to one that is already saved or present in Firefox. But the user can override that feature if they so wish quite easily.
