For the last few weeks I have been unable to read emails that come from googlealerts-noreply@google.com to my Gmail (which I open in Thundebird 102.6.1 64 bit) on my Win 11 PC. The body of the email is blank.

Tthe email is completely white, even though the subject line is visible as usual. In the source code of the email, the content of the message is there, and also the message is displayed normally on my iPhone in, for example, Gmail or the iOS Mail app. The emails from googlealerts-noreply@google.com are automated messages from Google News and previously it worked without problems for several years.

Other automated messages from Google display normally, for example, messages from google-maps-noreply@google.com, notify-noreply@google.com, analytics-noreply@google.com, gcr-noreply@google.com and other at google.com open and load completely without any problems. Other email accounts or messages in Thundebird do not have such or similar problem.

I tried turning Thundebird on in Safe mode (Shift + open) and also with the add-ons turned off, but that didn't help. I keep Thunderbird always up to date and it has shown up during recent updates.

The issue is quite new and only shows up in messages from the specific sender. Any ideas how to solve this? I'll try anything even using some add-on, if it helps.

Thanks!

Tomek

open the error console. (ctrl+Shift+J) Clear it. Open the invisible mail.

What errors appear? (there is a right click menu to enable copy and paste.

Check the view menu has message body set to original HTML.

Using the console I've determined that the e-mail is in Quick Mode. The error states:

  • "This page is in Quirks Mode. Page layout may be impacted. For Standards Mode use <\!DOCTYPE html\>"

View menu setting: Original HTML. Even if I change it to Simple HTML I still can't see the content. Only "View as text" reveals the message, but this settings is general for all emails, so I have to switch that view back to Original HTML for the other emails.

The mail is for some reason in Quirks Mode. I don't know how to force Standard Mode just for the specific sender. It seems it is not possible.

I'll have to switch to plain text for this sender and than back to Original HTML to read the other emails as usual.

Thank you, Matt.
