Unlike other independent domain extensions (e.g. .us.com) domains under .nyc.mn still appear greyed-out in the address bar - when will this change?

.NYC.MN is a newly-launched, independent domain extension, similar to .us.com, .uk.com and others. It serves the area of NYC:Manhattan. However, it has yet to be recognized as a domain extension by Firefox, and so domains under it appear greyed out in the address bar. Websites under the extension are owned, run and hosted by different people and are thus websites in their own right: not simply a sub-domain of a single NYC.MN website - in this case, the greying out causes confusion.

Please can .NYC.MN be placed on the list of recognized domain extensions, to allow users to know which site they are accessing? Thank you!

hello, please refer to http://publicsuffix.org/ on how to initiate such a change.

In recent Firefox versions, the default is to highlight the domain (Firefox recognizes "nyc.mn" as the domain in this case) in the Location/URL/Address bar for easier identification. Anything preceding the domain is not highlighted (gray).

Users can change that default by setting a preference, browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled, to false in about:config

  1. type about:config in the Location/URL/Address bar and press the Enter key
  2. if you see a warning, accept it (promise to be careful)
  3. Search = browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled
  4. double-click on the pref in the lower panel to toggle it to "false" OR right-click on the pref in the lower panel and choose "Toggle" to toggle it to "false"
  5. close the about:config tab

You appear to using a very old version of Firefox (version 14.0.1).

  • User agent reported with your original question: User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1

You should update to avoid known security issues in that old version.

If you believe that you have installed the latest version, see:
