Why is Thunderbird on Windows so agonizingly slow and unresponsive after recent updates? I've checked my memory, CPU, disk usage, network, everything. I've rebooted. I've tried it on multiple networks. Same thing - agonizingly slow and unresponsive. I've been using Thunderbird for over 22 years, and it's always been wonderful. Now, it SUCKS! What happened? Does anyone know of a better email client for Windows? I've contributed to T-Bird several times, but I can't support these latest updates. It's barely usable now. Help!

Any messages I have opened today on one of the email accounts on Thunderbird are not opening but the screen is filled with a random photo which is not one of mine. When I access these emails on another platform (via my phone or the BT website) the emails open normally. It seems to be a Thunderbird problem. I attach a screenshot of the picture on the screen. Can you throw any light on this please? It is rather disturbing.

I just had to change the password on my host email server. Now I can't send email and when I try, I her the error box asking me to enter a new password. I do that with the new pass word and the message comes back immediately. I checked my saved password for SMTP and it shows up as the new pass word. I can send mail from the host server email app so I know that end is working. I can also receive emails on Thunderbird from the host with the new password. I have 2 other email accounts on 3 different hosts and those send emails through Thunderbird without any issue. My host tech support checked out everything from their side and feel that it is something in Thunderbird. I have the newest version of Thunderbird which just downloaded a couple of days ago. I have checked everything I know but no luck. Help!

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but after compacting a mail folder, Thunderbird no longer shows the space saved (in MB) by the compaction operation.

I'm on 128.2.3esr (64-bit). Not sure at which version the display of this useful information stopped, but Thunderbird certainly used to show the space saved (in MB) by the compaction operation in the past.

I had a folder called Documents which I used to store important emails, somehow that folder disappeared and I now have one called Documents-1. I did not make any changes and the only thing I recalled doing was compacting the folders just to get rid of the obnoxious prompt that was constantly appearing offering to compact the folders. The new folder only contains I would say one third of what I had in the previous folder. Did it get erased ? does any one know where I can find such folder ?

Hello We use Thunderbird for our emails with a zimbra provider,

The problem is that when we're away and teleworking, our teams use webmail and thunderbird's tags don't really go back up to the zimbra server.

(they're displayed but we can't manage them: they don't appear in zimbra's tags/labels menu) 

and conversely, zimbra's tags don't go back down to thunderbird at all.

This is very annoying because we have a group mailbox where the tags are used to divide up the work and when we're away in webmail mode, it's impossible to find our mail.

does anyone have a clue?

we've already customized the pref.js file to tune the tags between each machine, so i'm thinking there must be a command in "pref.js" that lets you create tags recognized by the server and vice versa.

Asian characters in the "To" and "From" headers when using one of my email addresses

One of my email addresses, info@guninstructor.com, is used to communicate to and from students on my website. Suddenly, the registration forms received now have Asian characters instead of English in the "To" and "From" header spaces. If I print out the registration form, the Asian characters change to English. If I try a test email from one of my other email addresses to the info address, when I enter the info address in the "To" space, the memory automatically changes the address to the Asian characters for the name but not for the actual email address. My saved registration form emails dating all the way back to 2018 were also changed to the Asian character "To" and "From" header spaces. These were all previously English.

Is this some type of malware? Is it in my Firefox/Thunderbird program or is it in my website programming? My website is Word Press and is current and maintained.

Thank you in advance for your time and effort. This is mystifying to me.

Thunderbird apparently losing email occasionally (pop3)

This is the second time this has happened. I clicked the Get Messages button in Thunderbird and it said there were no messages - I knew there had to be some. So I shut down Thunderbird and restarted it. Again tried Get Messages. This time a notification popped up saying something about not being able to access the inbox because it was being used by something else. I clicked OK in that notification and then it immediately started downloading messages, counting up to 27 - everything looked normal. However, nothing appeared in the inbox. Unfortunately, I had the pop3 setup to delete messages from the server once downloaded (I have since changed that), so when I checked the server, there was nothing there. So it appears that everything worked as expected except that the messages did not appear in the inbox. I checked other folders and do not see them. Where could they have gone? And more importantly, is there any chance I can get them? Regards, Dave

Hi, I have Norton360 as an anti-virus. When I( try to get messages, I get the attached Norton response. Checking with Google for a solution, I learned that my anti-virus package was involved, so I uninstalled Norton. I then got the attached Windows Defender message. With both package giving approximately the same message, and seeing the certificate with a June date, which is when the problem started, I wonder if the problem could be due to obsolete data remaining in Thunderbird. What do you suggest I try?

Previously, my view of the Inbox folder displayed all messages, with the message header plus the message body contents. Now, some (but not all) messages display just the header but not the message body, and when I select the messages, the focus indicates that TB is viewing a different (usually the immediately-preceding) message, and NO contents/body are visible. I have tried to find out what is in the non-displayed message, and to force TB to focus on the offending message, but have had no success. From the message subject and header, some of these messages are important to me. How can I force TB to display them like it does the other messages. NOTE: Nothing in the message header indicates the messages with this problem are any different from the messages that are properly displayed.

Thunderbird: Moved Folders and now most of the conents are missing

In a foolish attempt to quickly reorganize, I moved a VITAL folder from Local Folders to a n EMail Account folder. I have done this a couple of times before over the years without problems but never with this large of a folder. Foolishly, I trusted the process and DID NOT DO A BACKUP first. (You would think I would have learned after 40+ years not to trust past experience, only Backups.)

After the move, the original folder remains but is empty and the new folder contains less than 95% of the original contents. Is there ANY recover process available? The old Thunderbird used to just tag deleted and moved contents until you compacted the data so you could manually recover.

Does such an option exist?

Any ideas or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciate as this is a folder containing communications associated with a Non-Profit for which I am the Chair. Client mode is off-line and all mail is downloaded from the Server at each check so the Mail Server is not an option.

Thanks in advance for any morsels of wisdom... Besides BACKUP!

Version: 128.2.3esr (64-bit) on Windows 11 Click on an open tab (other than main inbox tab) and Thunderbird partially minimalises, showing only a small part of the thunderbird screen.

Clicking on a email in the email receive list and instead of the body of the email apprearing in the view window, it opens in a new tab

Highlight more than 2 or 3 messages in the email list to action them and before I can, they all open. It is impossible to select a series of emails to delete, move or tag them because after 2 or 3 they all open. Closing all the open tabs then leaves the emails highlighted and I can then perform whatever action I need, but this is strange new behavaiour. In fact all 4 issues are new.

Clicking on the down arrow on the keyboard does not always move the cursor to the next email in the list. Can anyone suggest a solution please? Michael

For the last couple weeks I have been unable to rename, delete, add to, or edit my email storage folders under any of my email pop accounts. I have not made any changes to the set up during this time. Only TB upgrades.

I CAN move email messages into and out of the folders. No problem there. I can also receive and send emails with no problem.


I have 128.2esr(64-bit) running on the latest Windows. This problem occurs on both my laptop and desktop.

I am testing a private POP3 mail server, so I set up an account in Thunderbird for it. I set it to check for email every minute.

I have since shut the server down, but Thunderbird is giving me no warning that it is unable to fetch new messages for the account, which I find surprising.

What is the expected behaviour?
