My OS is ubuntu 14.10 LTS, I am using Thunderbird version 38.4.0. I have 2 accounts, a gmail account and an office365 mail account. Up until yesterday I was able to send and receive emails on both accounts, however now it fails with the following error:

Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.googlemail.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing Outgoing server (SMTP) connections. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.

(Or a similar message when connecting to the office 365 smtp server.)

I have restarted the computer, confirmed the server addresses, reset the passwords, confirmed I can ping the servers.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Your server settings for Gmail look good. I'm not really familiar with Office365, but they're probably ok as well.

Is there any external firewall or proxy you have to go through? Do you have Internet access from that machine at all?

What's suspicious that both accounts fail at the same time. So my best guess is that the cause is rather external, and not Thunderbird.

Ah, yes - I just went and checked with IT - something was sending so much we got blacklisted, so they blocked all SMTP outgoing messages, and put a proxy in place. (Would have been nice if they had sent around an email. Oh well.)

Thanks for your help!
