multiple attempts to install firefox without co-installing the Babylon and funmoods software. have used firefox installation setups directly from the firefox home page (4 times) as well as from cnet and major geeks. extremely hard to completely get rid of the unwanted software, even after uninstalling firefox. have tried all of the various suggestions for uninstalling the offending software but have been unable to figure out how to block the installation in the first place or to understand why even from your own site the offending software seems to sneak in.

can you provide a guaranteed clean firefox installation file or tell me how to identify the presence of the unwanted software before it installs and then to be able to opt out of it. I have never run into this type of problem with any of the many pieces of software which I have downloaded and installed. I really would like to be able to use firefox once again and would appreciate any help.

current browser is IE10 on a win 7 64bit alaptop computer

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Your plugins and settings remain even if you uninstall FF (but not remove the data dir). So the most likely cause of Funmoods is your old data. You might want to install FF, and then remove funmoods and babylon.

Some plugins/extensions are installed by separate applications installed on your system via the Windows registry and those will appear in Firefox even with a new Firefox profile and are not removed when uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox. To remove those items from Firefox and your system, you must uninstall/remove the separate application using Windows Control Panel.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I cannot recall whether there were ever any programs which registered in control panel; if there were, I removed them via control panel. I have looked in internet explorer, under tools/addons, and any mention of Babylon or funmoods has been deleted. I have searched through all the user folders and cannot find any references to bablyon or funmoods. I also have run the program 'autoruns' to look for any references to either of these programs; again completely negative. finally, I used the registry cleaner function of ccleaner, it did not turn up any references to Babylon or funmoods.

in spite of all these negative searches, the last time I tried installing firefox, funfoods and Babylon were still showing up.

I do not know where else i can look for entries to delete. can anyone make any other suggestions?

Hi jorvik, where do they show up? For example:

  • Take over home page
  • Take over new tab page
  • Take over address bar search (before Firefox 23)
  • Toolbar
  • Extra search box

By the way, you might not notice some of the Babylon software because it uses a bland name like "Browser Manager", "Bprotector" or "Object Installer". Check for those in the Control Panel and also on the Add-ons page.

Funmoods

  1. You may have gotten this by downloading/installing "smilies" for use on social networking sites. Do not download such crapware.
  2. Also look at items 7-10 and 12 in the following link which was posted above - http://funmoods.com/english/faq#a6

Babylon

  1. In Control Panel, look for and remove Babylon, Babylon toolbar on IE, Yontoo, BrowserProtect and any other programs related to Babylon LTD.
  2. In older versions of Windows (XP), you may need to click on "Click here for support information" on the CP applications/programs list to see the publisher's name.

General

  1. Take care to look for opt-out items when installing any free "fun" software from the internet. Avoid such items to keep your system free of such pests
  2. Some good (free versions) scanners to download, update, install and run (all of them for thorough scanning and cleaning)
  3. For more information, other free scanners, and links to free specialized malware forums for assistance - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?
