At startup of Firefox: "Amazon Assistant" webpage automatically opens a new window continuously in an un-ending loop. How can I stop it?

I am working on OS X, MacBook Pro, 13", 2010. 1) I click to open Firefox 2) Home page opens (Bing) 3) Amazon Assistant opens a window, Amazon Assistant opens another window, Amazon Assistant opens another window, etc.

This happens over and over in a continuous loop. This started when I updated Firefox. I NEVER signed up for "Amazon Assistant". I do not use plug-ins.

I tried uploading a screenshot, but I'm getting the spinning wheel in the "Uploaded images:" box. (So there is something else that needs working on. ;-)

Amazon Assistant is a legitimate program, as far as I can tell. If you did not install it yourself, it may have been included with another program that was installed.

Can you see Amazon Assistant in Applications? If so, it might be enough if you just uninstall it from there. If not, start Firefox in Safe Mode, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode, go to about:addons and see if you can find Amazon Assistant under one of the add-on groups, then remove or disable it.

If neither works, you can try giving it the anti-malware treatment with MBAM, https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/.

Does this stop if you set another browser as the default browser in case the application try to open a page in Firefox in a way that doesn't work with Firefox?
