When I upgraded to v91, the bookmarks menu disappeared. There is a blank row where it used to be. If I show only on new tab, the blank row appears on a new tab. My default is to show always.

The bookmarks menu contains all of the stuff it did before and can be accessed via the main Bookmarks command. But it's missing from the row under the main command row containing URL address field, home, etc.

I can't drag anything new to the blank row from the address field.

How do I make the bookmarks menu reappear?

I've already restarted Firefox 2 times knowing that startup issues may resolve upon reset.

Once more with feeling.

Now the bookmarks menu items SHOW UP!

Third times a charm.

Make sure toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible. Open the Customize window and set what toolbars (Show/Hide Toolbars) and toolbar items to display.

  • Right-click empty toolbar area -> Customize
  • "3-bar" menu button -> Customize
  • View -> Toolbars
    *you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

The bookmark row is empty and "SHOWS ALWAYS" as stated. In customize, it already shows "bookmarks Toolbar Items".

The configuration hasn't changed since it worked (for years). Just an upgrade to v91 Firefox.

I moved a number of bookmarks from the menu folder (since it had a large number of bookmarks), but it didn't make a difference as suspected.

Are there bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder if you check this in the sidebar (Command+B) ?

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for issues with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use the "Places Database" -> "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
  • you lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created

You may have to restore an older bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder via the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

>Are there bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder if you check this in the sidebar

I thought I stated this explicitly above. No issues finding the bookmarks menu folder via Bookmarks command. Access and use of bookmarks are normal from the menu folder or any other bookmarks folder for that matter. It just doesn't show in the menu row as per the attached graphic.

No obvious corruption...

You only see bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar that are in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

Bookmarks in the Bookmarks Menu folder won't show up there if that is what you expected.

Sorry for not being precise. You are correct. There is NO confusion which folder contains the bookmarks that show up in the row above the tabs. It may confuse some because the bookmark toolbar folder ALSO shows up under the bookmarks menu folder via the main desktop "BOOKMARKS" menu item. So you can access them via the toolbar row AND the BOOKMARKS command.
