I only yesterday installed Thunderbird 38.7.0 and had ("compact all folders" when it will save over 50 MB) turned ON.

Now almost all of my old IMAP Hotmail sub-folders are 100% empty! (Empty everywhere. not just within Thunderbird. Empty via Hotmail's WebClient, empty via Android Email Client, everywhere. Thousands of important emails in dozens of folders are now 100% gone.

I can only hope that Thunderbird compacted, copied & stored all of the emails in these folders somewhere.

Can anyone advise how I can recover them all and return them back into Microsoft's IMAP folders?
