I try to update firefox on my MacBook. When I slide the icon to my applications folder it tells me cannot install and some items had to be skipped.

After I download. I slide the FF icon to the applications folder. I enter my password, and then it tells me that that it could not update and some items had to be skipped. I checked finder and unlocked the items and it still gave me the same error. I am using OSX Lion.

Is Firefox running when you try to do that? You have to exit Firefox before you can replace it.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop
