Thunderbird 68.4.2 Getting "Sending of password for user did not succeed" error instead of prompt to re-enter password after mistyping

Used to be that when I mistyped a password (I type terribly) I'd get a prompt to retry the password. Now it seems I only get the error "Sending of Password for <user> did not succeed... Server Error, try again later [OK]". No chance to retry the password without restarting Thunderbird, wherein if I type it correctly, it works fine. I have several accounts, so to have to re-enter all the passwords is annoying and increases the chance I'll mess another one up. I don't use a PW manager or save them within TB. Has a setting changed? Why no retry prompt? Thanks.

After you get the error message with no option to retry, which is sent by the server, not TB, try this: select a folder in another account, then select the Inbox for the first account. Do you get a prompt to enter the password?
