Can't download email and antivirus shuts down

I'm having a recurring problem with my T-bird. When I try downloading a large number of emails, the programs simply stops receiving messages midway during the downloading process. When I close and reopen TB, it confirms my account and displays "downloading message 1 of xxx" but does nothing else. Restarting TB doesn't change anything.

This doesn't happen when I'm downloading a small number of emails from my server; only a large number...say a few hundred.

Another oddity - when TB freezes when trying to download messages, my security suite (Vipre) shuts down. I have to manually restart it.

I've tried shutting down my firewall and antivirus suite, nothing. My account settings seem to be okay. Restarting Windows does nothing. Also, uninstalling and reinstalling TB doesn't work.

My messages exist on the server as I can check them online.

I've fixed this problem before by changing something in the account settings, but why would TB start downloading messages, then stop midway and not allow me to download them again?

I'm using TB 45.0 on Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.

Thanks.

It is probably Vipre in it's death throes that causes the process to stop. After all they check each mail as it comes down, so if the anti virus dies anything relying on it handing things over downstream also does.

I suggest you contact Vipre support.

Thanks for the tip. While my antivirus isn't on its last legs, it was filtering my emails a little too aggressively. After researching it, I reset the settings on my antivirus and so far, so good.
