I use Thunderbird to send/receive messages and I use the local storage option to save my emails. We work with cildren, so need to know the data is safe and compliant with these new laws.

By default, Thunderbird does not encrypt anything, so anyone accessing the hard drive can read all the emails stored on the device. IMHO using full disk encryption, and following general security best practices is the best way.
