Under my Address Book, I have my institutional directory as an address book. When I search in the Address Book, the results include entries that match my search term either in many fields (First Name, Last Name, email, …, even matches in the middle of a field).

While composing a message, entering something in the address field will offer auto-completions drawn from that Directory. Those auto-completions might match what I have typed in their Last Name or email, but not in the first name, and never in the middle of a field. How can I enable this?

To clarify with an example, the directory in the Address Book, with the search "Griffin", shows me 8 users whose last name starts that way and 7 users whose first name starts that way. In the address field of composing a message, typing "Griffin" offers the 8 users with that as a last name, but NOT the 7 users with that first name.

I assume your address book is an ldap one. I have no definitive answer, but I suggest you have a look at this old bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=668087 Changing the template used to query the ldap server is discussed and will I think "fix" your problem.
