I updated Firefox today. Since then, the tabs have crashed dozens of times. It's very frustrating, and I am thinking of switching to Chrome instead. This happens in email outlook tabs, Youtube tabs, etc. It says "Gah. Your tab crashed" Then it restarts and then crashed again after a short time. I've refreshed and reinstalled, but it still happens! VERY ANNOYING. Any suggestions before I abandon Firefox altogether after years of it being my go-to browser? Thanks.

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 54 and below:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the Advanced panel and the General tab.
  3. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
    Fx55Performance-disableHWA
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

If the problem is resolved, you should check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in these Knowledge base articles:

Thank you.

Wow, disabling the hardware acceleration and recommended performance settings seems to have done the trick! It appears to be back to its old seamless functionality before the update which triggered the instability.

I sure hope those bugs are worked out going forward, but for now I'll be just fine without hardware acceleration. Thanks for the help everyone! :) A special thanks to FredMcD for devising this insightful remedy!

I'll go ahead and mark this as solved.

This time it does not seem to be generating any new crash reports! It is happening when connecting to the Bluetooth speaker and playing music from Youtube. It says "Gah. Your tab just crashed" and it is doing this over and over again. It doesn't seem to happen when not playing from the Bluetooth. Very odd. Also add it is now not making new crash reports...?

P.S. It only seems to happen with Firefox; I'm playing from Chrome now and it seems to be fine.

I had issues with video some time ago, enabling/disabling multiprocess windows together with video acceleration was a solution (both enabled or both disabled). browser.tabs.remote and layers.acceleration
