I have created an application specific password for Thunderbird in my Google account. When I try to add the account to Thunderbird I get this screen. Each time I enter my gmail address and click "Next" it returns to the same screen.

Chosen solution

Delete any items in Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, set the authentication to OAuth2 for the incoming and outgoing, and check that cookies are allowed in TB Options/Privacy. Then restart TB, enter the account password in the browser window, and see if it proceeds to the next step to confirm access by TB.

App passwords aren't needed with OAuth2 authentication, which is the default in the setup wizard. Enter the regular account password in the OAuth browser window when prompted (must have TB 68 or later).

I tried that as well and it still takes me back to the same google login screen.

The problem is that the google account window never advances beyond the point where I enter my gmail address. Each time I enter it and click "Next" the window prompts me for the email address again: https://imgur.com/dB9Xx0c.png.

(Sorry for the multiple posts. I am trying to link to a screenshot and it has not yet appeared. Here is try #5).

I have been trying to post a screenshot, but that seems unnecessary now because you are right. When I setup Thunderbird a few days ago, I disabled cookies and then forgot about it. I have it working now with the app-specific password I created in my Google account security settings.

Thread drift: when I clicked through the google authorization dialogs, it only mentioned email. How do I grant Thunderbird read/write access to calendars and contacts?

The easiest way to sync Google (and other providers) calendars and contacts is with TbSync and other add-ons by the same author. For TB 78, use version 2.16.
