In checking my password during account setup, I get an error message even though my username and pw are correct and my config was found in the ISP database.

Thunderbird stopped reliably accessing my email, would usually not prompt for a password, and has no stored passwords; when it did ask for my password it would connect and download email but that only happened rarely, the rest of the time it would show it was connected to the server but did not download emails or provide any error message. After extensive troubleshooting attempts I finally used Account Settings to remove the account, and then tried to add it back in. Using automatic setup, Thunderbird reports that my configuration was found in the Mozilla ISP database, but when it then proceeds to check my password, returns the error "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." I'm certain that my password is correct, and the setup never asks for a username, just my name as shown to others and my email address. I've tried manually changing the server from mobile.charter.net, which Thunderbird filled in during automatic configuration, to mail.twc.com, which used to be the server name, but then Thunderbird reports that it failed to find the settings for my email account. My ISP is Spectrum/Time Warner. Thank you for any help.

Autoconfiguration does not always insert the correct settings, especially for a service like Spectrum/TWC that suggests a variety of settings. See this post for some suggestions. Click the Manual config. button after you enter your credentials in the File/New/Existing Mail Account window and enter the settings manually. Or, go offline from File/Offline/Work Offline during the setup to bypass the ISP database lookup.
