There is a new decentralized domain name system that has been built called namecoin. The problem is that no browsers support it currently so the only to view the domains is through complicated software or proxies. I am wondering if there are any plans on adding support for this system to Firefox?

Not directly as is looks like dns.bit is not working, but it looks like you need a proxy http://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains#Use_a_DNS_serv...

Have you tried this?

Also Firefox will simply 'asks the system to resolve a fqdn'(ty Cork!)

I know that there are proxies. I was just wondering if Firefox planned on adding this by default?
