It may be possible to put controls other than bookmarks on the bar. You could try the Customize feature to see whether it's something that just doesn't belong on the bar at all.

Either of these should let you inspect the bar more closely:

• right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Customize
• tap the Alt key > View menu > Toolbars > Customize

The "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" displays your actual bookmarks, and the "* Bookmarks" displays the drop-down menu (if you are using the compact menus/orange Firefox button; it becomes hidden when the classic menu bar is displayed). Do you see anything else? To remove other controls, drag them to the Customize dialog and drop them with the unused buttons.

Alternately, if it turns out to be a strange bookmark, try deleting it from the Library dialog. Press Ctrl+Shift+b and then select Bookmarks Toolbar in the left pane. Can you find the bookmark there?

Hi there. When I enter the Customize feature the only thing I can see there is "Bookmarks Toolbar Items". Also I forgot to mention that this "(no title)" thing does not appear in the Bookmarks Toolbar, it can only be seen when I browse the Bookmarks Toolbar folder in the Library.

I should have figured that out from your original post. I think there is a possibility that your bookmarks/history database (places.sqlite) has a corrupted record. Rather than take drastic action on that immediately, could you do a test? The test is to exit Firefox, rename your existing database, and restart Firefox. Firefox should import your last bookmarks backup. You then could check whether the problem remains or whether you got a clean restore of bookmarks. After the test, assuming you prefer to retain your history, you could undo the procedure and try restoring your bookmark backup into the database to see whether that overwrites the problem record. If not, then we would go back to possible drastic action.

Test procedure:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename places.sqlite to something like places_20130614.sqlite. Keep this window open.

Restart Firefox. By design, Firefox should import your last automatic bookmark backup.

If you return to the Library dialog, how does it look?

To reverse the test (but preserve a backup of your history/bookmark database):

Exit Firefox

Delete the newly created places.sqlite file

Right-click copy and paste the places_20130614.sqlite and rename the copy to places.sqlite

Restart Firefox and open the Library dialog. Should look like it did a few minutes ago before any changes.

If the test showed no corruption, try to restore your last bookmarks backup. The procedure is described in this article: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

Does any of that get us closer to a solution?

Your test procedure worked. When I do that, the indelible bookmark is gone. However, when I reverse the procedure, it does come back.

It is best to delete the places.sqlite file in cases like this and let Firefox rebuild the bookmarks automatically from the JSON backup.
Unfortunately you will lose the history this way (you can use copy/paste to make history items a bookmark).

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

I too have this problem but in my case. My bookmarks can't be rebuild from backup. If I apply the above solution I all my bookmarks go away so is there any solution to it rather than taking drastic step?

Hi imonline, could you try creating a manual backup and an HTML export? The backup format stores more details (such as tags) but if you really cannot resolve the issue any other way, importing the HTML file should at least get you the bookmarks. (I say "should" because I don't know whether the corruption you're experiencing might truncate the file.)

Thanks. I exported all my bookmarks and deleted the places.sqlite file. But I lost my history. Is there any way I could backup that too?
