Emails sent from one Hotmail account always get replies sent to a different (default) account.

I have seven Hotmail accounts - one of which is the default account (call it Hotmail 1). All work fine. However, when I send an email from (for example) Hotmail 5, it transmits OK and keeps a record in the sent box of Hotmail 5. However when the recipient replies to me (using the reply button) the reply is always addressed to, and received by, my default account Hotmail 1. If I then need to send a reply to this email, it is being sent from a different account (i.e. Hotmail 1) which is confusing for the recipient when I seem to be using two accounts. How can I stop this from happening please.

This sounds like your hotmail 5 account is actually using the hotmail 1 smtp server. So in effect it is not using the email address you have in the 'FROM' field, it is using the one in the assigned smtp server, hence you get replies to that email address.

  • Right click on mail account in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Left Pane at the bottom select 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'

This should show you your list of outgoing smtp servers. Ideally you should have one for each email address.

  • select each in turn to locate the smtp server which has: 'User name' = email address of hotmail 5 account
  • click on 'Edit' button
  • 'Description:' type something that stands out and easily identifies this account, such as 'Work' or 'Personal' or a name like 'GAS hot5'

This field is only used to help identify the difference between servers, especially usual if the server happens to be the same.

  • click on 'OK'

In the left Pane,

  • select the name of the problem hotmail 5 account

bottom right you will see 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'

  • click on the drop down and select the one which starts with the description eg: 'Work' or 'Personal' or a name like 'GAS hot5'
  • click on OK

A couple of images are below as a guide to help explain.

Many thanks. All of the accounts were shown to be using the default SMTP user. This must have been set automatically from the moment I entered the accounts into Thunderbird - I did not manually change or enter anything. Thanks again for the prompt and helpful response.
