After the update before last (6.0.1 I think) Firefox crashed on resart and failed to send in the error report; I've had to roll back to V4 to use Firefox - any clues?

The update to 6.0, 6.0.1 or 6.0.2 will not run on my system. Th einstall goes ok, the restart starts, throws up a bunch of Java incompatabilities then crashes with the apology screen offering to send in a report if I hit restart or quit. No matter how many times I hit restart, the report submission fails and Firefox stays crashed. Looking at my crash reports, the problem seems to start on or around August 18th 2011 - the crash ID below is the last generated (not found at your end obviously, as it never reached you)

Thanks for the suggestion; Complete uninstall (Bookmarks saved to X-Marks), re-install, same problem (minus the imcompatible Jave bits & bobs, 'cos they weren't there to be objected to). So I'm back to V4 (might try hunting down a newer (pre V6) version)

Just as an update; my problem still persists. I've had to set updates to "advise" to stop having to re-install V4 every couple of days - to be frank, I've no love for Google, but if no-one comes up with a working fix for this, I'm switching to Chrome!

A function in Firefox was changed in Firefox 6 that was being used by a trojan/malware. The symptom after the change is that a user's Firefox will crash on starting Firefox, if the user's system is infected with a trojan/malware that is trying to use the changed function. The crash signatures in some bug reposts submitted on infected systems with problems starting Firefox 6 are similar to your crash signature (your bug report: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/3022693b-41cf-4843-bb48-055602110913 ; note Signature: nsStandardURL::SchemeIs(char const*, int*))

Do a thorough scan for malware
Download, install and update as many of the following as possible until your infections are cleaned.

  1. The free versions of these scanners will detect infections and clean your system; no need to purchase
  2. Different malware scanners detect some malware that other scanners do not.
  3. If you are unable to download the malware programs,
    • change the name of the installer program before saving the download to your hard drive, and
    • once installed, go to the installation folder for the program and change the name of the program executable file (i.e., for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, change mbam.exe to xyz-mb.exe), then update the program and run the scan.
    • you may need to download on an un-infected computer, change the name of the installer program, copy the installer to a CD or USB thumb drive, and transport to your system for installation.
  4. Some stubborn malware will need to be removed in Windows Safe Mode with Networking'. WARNING: Download all the tools first, then disconnect your modem before entering Windows Safe Mode, as your Firewall and AV/AS probably will not load in Windows Safe Mode. See:

If these don't find or can't clear the infection(s), post in one of these forums for specialized malware removal help:

  1. Read and follow their rules for posting
  2. Follow their instructions to the letter
  3. Be patient; you are put in a queue and you will get a response when they get to your post

Not related to your question, but...

You need to update some plug-ins:

Does not relate to your question, but...

You have multiple old Java Console extensions that Java did not clean-up during updates. You need Java Console only if you do Java programming/development or debug Java applets on web pages. You can see them in Add-ons > Extensions, but you can not remove them from there. Removing them will not affect the functioning of Java on websites. You can manually remove them, if you do not do Java development work to avoid future, possible problems/conflicts:

Your old Java Console versions:

Well, I spent a week installing, and running all the suggested "cures", in both normal and safe mode. A grand total of 957 items were removed (mostly tracking cookies, and to be fair, many were in an old backup folder on a spare drive). Surely, I must be able to get 6.0.2 to run now?

No. All is as before. No change.

I'm going to try the "forums for specialized malware removal help" suggested, but if anyone can suggest how I might word my plea...

Your Malware undetectable by most anti-malware programs (because randomly named) is still present and has other hidden symptoms.

If this Malware is a Rookit, try this free Kapersky's tool.

Check and tell if its working.

Many thanks.

We now know that Kaspersky's rootkit and the 7 unsigned files it detected are not the answer.

Update. Seems the upgrade to 7.0 has solved the problem (or maybe the problem wasn't this end?)
