Make sure that Firefox closes properly.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Rename (or delete) the #sjs and sessionstore.bak# files and delete possible numbered sessionstore-##.js files in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

Actually, before posting here I tried to find a solution, and in the process was directed to the Session Manager add-on. It was that add-on which gave me the crash message. Behind the add-on window, however, was this message from FF.

This shows no crashes since 30 March 2014, and only one with the prefix 'bp-'. Top six on the list

Oh, about the memory on that three month old crash report on an older version of the browser. Yes. That doesn't really seem to pertain to the problems I'm having now with the newest version of FF?

I meant you lost me on the "Please remove, Firefox hanged". Is that instruction for me (and, if so, crypticmuch?) or some forum shorthand about which I don't need to worry?

Sorry, My Firefox hanged, and I ended up posting the same message twice. I was asking for the moderator to remove that message.

I'm very diligent with the malware hunting, cross-checking with several (not all at once, of course) programs including MSE and MalwareBytes, so I don't think that would be the problem -- but I'll run through the regimen again just to be sure.

FWIW, I haven't had the problem today -- actually, it only happens 1 in 10 (or so, I haven't actually been tracking it that exactly) times I start up the browser. So, it's more of an annoyance than an OMFGWTF, Firefox!?!?!?!1!?! thing. :)
