How to return to the 56-era new tab page w/ 60?

I didn't like the changes to the new tab page in FF quantum, so used the advice given on a previous question (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1185425) to revert to the old style of new tab page. Unfortunately, with firefox 60, this advice no longer works. The best I can get is just top sites only, but the icons for this only show the top site's icon rather than a screenshot of the page. These are much too small, leaving loads of blank page around them (and adding more top sites would make the new tab page much too busy); and the icons & titles chosen aren't very useful (e.g., the icon for the google maps page is just the google logo with the title "google", this isn't very informative).

To paraphrase:

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled = False

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled = False

But activity stream won't die!

Is it possible to change back, without giving up and just installing the ESR firefox? I like the lower ram usage of quantum, but the UI is a deal breaker.

Thanks in advance for your reply!

That was for a browser before Quantum. All fixes or just about all do not work after Nov 14, 2017 so if ever search again you want after that date.

This is what you want I believe : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Sorry esr is now Quantum Based (I think) and is at version 60 as of today. Yes you can move to that if you wish.

Are you sure that that was before quantum? The "question details" entry for the question I linked state they were using firefox 57, and it was posted on 15/11/18 - the day after quantum launched. The fix posted there did work prior to FF 60, but does not anymore.

That addon is not what I'm looking for - I'm not trying to redirect the new tab page to a web-accessible URL, I'm trying to go back to the old style of new tab page with several tiles showing screenshots of the most commonly used pages.

Sorry, since it was archived I did not look as hard as I should have.

Open a New Tab and Click the Gear Icon in the Upper Right Top of the page.

Also sorry there is a version of 52.8.2esr available, they added a switch to the page which I did not know was there so yes can go back but will be updated to 60esr by Aug.

Massive changes to the new Tab page in Firefox 60; what worked in Firefox 57, 58, and 59 don't work in Firefox 60. User options are very limited now; number of rows can be changed, but the number of columns can't; I get 8 rows across the page which is too much for my tastes.

The best I can suggest is to look at the New Tab Tools extension. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/ Allows the number of rows and columns to be set, but I can get any images to appear from browsing history.

Some newtab prefs are gone in Firefox 60. There are more changes to the new tab page like you can now drag tiles around and there are three-dot menus
