Autofill logins on Firefox

Firefox automatically saves and fills in your login information by default, so you wouldn't have to enter them every time. This article explains how you can control whether or not to autofill your passwords.

Save passwords automatically

To adjust Firefox's initial setting, which automatically offers to store passwords, follow these steps:

  1. At the top right, click the menu button Fx89menuButton to open the menu panel. Then, select Passwords.

  3. At the top right, click the Firefox logins menu Three dot menu and then select PreferencesOptions.

  4. The Firefox Privacy & Security panel will open to the Logins and PasswordsPasswords section.
5. Add a checkmark next to Ask to save logins and passwords for websitesAsk to save passwords to enable the password prompt, or uncheck to disable it.

To manage your saved logins, click the Saved Logins Saved Passwords button to open the Firefox Password Manager about:logins page.

Enable/disable login autofill

  1. At the top right, click the menu button Fx89menuButton to open the menu panel. Then, select Passwords.

  4. The Firefox Privacy & Security panel will open to the Logins and PasswordsPasswords section.
5. Make sure the Ask to save logins and passwords for websitesAsk to save passwords option is checked and check the Autofill logins and passwordsFill usernames and passwords automatically option to enable it, or uncheck to disable it.

Note: Some websites have a limit on the length of the password field. If you paste or autofill input that is too long you may see a message such as: “Please shorten this text to 20 characters or less”, and will need to use a shorter password.

Disable autosave for specific websites

To prevent Firefox from saving logins and passwords for a certain website:

  1. At the top right, click the menu button Fx89menuButton to open the menu panel. Then, select Passwords.

  3. At the top right, click the Firefox logins menu Three dot menu and then select PreferencesOptions.

5. Click the Exceptions… button.

6. Add the website's URL.
7. Click Block.
8. Click Save Changes.

Passkeys in Firefox

Passkeys provide a quicker, more straightforward, and secure sign-in method than traditional passwords. From Firefox version 122 onwards, Passkeys are smoothly incorporated into Firefox's Autofill functionality.

Using Passkeys in Firefox on Windows

  1. Launch Firefox and go to a website that supports Passkeys.
  2. On the site's login page, click on the username or password field.
  3. Look for the Use a Passkey option and click on it. Once you select this option, a dialog box for Passkeys will pop up on your system.

  4. In the dialog, choose your preferred authentication method and then click the Next button.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the authentication process and log in to the website.
Note: The option to use a Passkey will only be available on websites that support this technology. The process to use Passkeys in Firefox may vary slightly based on the version of Windows you are using.

Using Passkeys in Firefox on macOS

  1. Launch Firefox and go to a website that supports Passkeys.
  2. On the site's login page, click on the username or password field.
  3. Look for the Use a Passkey option and click on it. Once you select this option, a dialog box for Passkeys will pop up on your system.

  4. In the dialog, choose your preferred authentication method and then click the Continue button.

  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the authentication process and log in to the website.
Note: The option to use a Passkey will only be available on websites that support this technology. The process to use Passkeys in Firefox may vary slightly based on the version of macOS you are using.
