Immediately after download of 56.0.1 and Firefox restart I have NO internet connection for ANY browser (FF, IE, Chrome). 3 other computers HAVE internet both hard-wired and/or Wi-Fi. Modem Rebooted. Windows rebooted. Modem cables swapped. All to no avail. Compaq laptop CQ57-229WM Windows 7 64-bit. Sorry I cannot add Troubleshooting Information as I must use a different computer to post this.

Thank you anyone for help.

A Firefox update should not prevent internet connections for other browsers. See Firefox and other browsers can't load websites.

You could also try a Microsoft forum at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows or the Windows 7 forum at sevenforums.com

I now find that I CAN access the internet but ONLY with Internet Explorer; Not Firefox or Chrome. Problem occurred IMMEDIATELY after 56.0.1. I don't believe in coincidences.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program. Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process. See:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.
