New Thunderbird (Nov 2018) not showing drop downs in menu bar even though menu bar is checked

Latest version of Thunderbird installed (November 28, 2018). When I start the program, the items in the menu bar (e.g., file, save, tools, etc.) briefly appear but then disappear. The menu bar is checked so it should appear (and the space for it does appear).

Pressing alt or any other combination of keys I can come up with fails to show the items in the menu, so I have no way to go in and try to set options or disable add-ons (I have installed the menu bar add-on, but I'm not sure if it's the problem, and I have no way to get at it).

What are my options to get this resolved.

Chosen solution

Start Thunderbird in Safe Mode and test menus. Report back on results. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Bert, What did you determine to be the cause of your problem?

It believe this was specifically regarding the add-on Signature Switch, which previously appeared on the Mail Toolbar, but no longer does. That has not changed.

I found another way to activate Signature Switch.
