Hi, I need to install attachment extractor, but it is not available for newer versions of mozilla thunderbird. What can I do? will it be updated? or can I install an old version of thunderbird, in Italian?

re : I need to install attachment extractor, but it is not available for newer versions of mozilla thunderbird. will it be updated?

The last version was called 'AttachmentExtractor Continued 2.0.6' which worked on versio 68*.

Addons are not created and maintained by Thunderbird. They are the responsiblity of whomever was the author. If you click on the link for that addon extension, you can read that the author has no intention of maintaining it any further.

So really, you either change your habit and manually extract :( but at least you keep up to date knowing you are using a product that is more secure or you downgrade.

Please note that Thunderbird is currently only updating version 68 to another 68 eg: 68.12.0 to 68.12.1 Thunderbird is not maintaining/allowing an auto update from version 68 to 78.

If your computer auto updated from a 68 to 78 version, then you have 'Updater Software' running on your computer. This could be part of your Anti-virus package. Only allow Thunderbird to perform updates.

You can install an old version of Thunderbird, but it is not a simple case of uninstalling and then installing the old version. There were changes made when version 68 came out which meant Thunderbird used a profile per installation, so going back was not as straight forward. Now after installing, you do not let Thunderbird auto start; you have to use a command to start Thunderbird via the profile manager and allow a downgrade. In addition when version 78 was installed by you, all the address books had their format changed from .mab files to .sqlite files, so this would need to be sorted prior afterininstalling but before reinstalling old version of 68*.

Process to go back to another version in Windows OS: A. Ensure the issue was not caused by Updater Software - remove Thunderbird from that products list. B. Ensure the current version of 78 has the Update settings set to check for update but ask option.

  • Menu app icon > Options > General
  • scroll down to 'Updates' sub section
  • select 'check for updates, but let me chose when you install them'

Now fix address book.mab files, uninstall, download and only start using special method. 1. Exit Thunderbird. 2. Access profile name folder. Thunderbird by default stores your profile in this location:

   C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\

3. Search for files that end in .mab.bak and rename them as .mab - (remove the .bak part) So 'abook.mab.bak' becomes 'abook.mab' and 'history.mab.bak' becomes 'history.mab'. You may have others that need the same renaming.

4. Uninstall Thunderbird. 5. Download a fresh installation of 68.12.1 from here:

  • Choose either win32 or win64 (note Win64 can only be used on computer that are 64bit - if you require Thunderbird to interact with other software like sage, then you may discover only win32 can be used with other win32 programs.)
  • Choose preferred language eg: it/ (italian)
  • click on the Thunderbird Setup 68.12.1.exe link to download.

6 Install the program BUT DO NOT select the option to allow it to start Thunderbird after installation.

7. In windows Search type: Run 8. select the 'Run'app 9. In Run app text box type: thunderbird.exe -P --allow-downgrade Note there is a space before and after the -P 10. Click on OK

This should open the 'Profile Manager' window 11. select the 'profile name' you want to use. 12. select checkbox 'Use the selected profile without asking at startup' 13. Click on 'Start Thunderbird'
