  • Check for new messages every __ minutes: Make Thunderbird check for new messages automatically on a set time interval.
  • Allow immediate server notifications when new messages arrive: (IMAP accounts only) With this setting, Thunderbird will use the IMAP IDLE command, allowing you to receive new messages as soon as they arrive on the server without having to check the server for new messages.

When I delete a message: (IMAP accounts only) By default, when you delete a message, Thunderbird will move it to the Trash folder for that account. Here, you can change that behavior.

  • Move it to this folder: Instead of moving the message to the trash folder, use this menu to select a different folder where messages will be moved to.
  • Just mark it as deleted: Using this setting will keep the deleted message in the original folder, but strike a line through it to show you it has been marked as deleted. To clear the folder of deleted messages, right-click on the folder and select Compact.

  • Message Store Type: This setting determines if Thunderbird stores mail folders locally in single files (For example, there's a file called Inbox) or stores each message in its own file. For more information, see Maildir in Thunderbird.
NOTE: This setting is determined when creating an account.
