Browser very frequently freezes for a min or 2; often, turning circle gets thick, screen fades, then crashes; is this Firefox?

1) When viewing web sites, I'll try to pull down the screen with my mouse, but the screen is frozen! I keep tugging (just a way of fidgeting, because it doesn't make a difference; I just have to wait) and finally, after maybe 30 seconds or more, it comes back to life, and I can move my cursor. Only to freeze up again. And again. And again....

2) Sometimes the twirling circle gets very thick, and then everything freezes. Also, the screen fades out. Finally, it crashes.

Is Firefox at fault? Or something else? (I'm using Windows 7, and Firefox 40.0.3.) And what can I do about it? This isn't a new problem, but it seems to be much worse lately.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.
