Our local folders have disappeared after a Thunderbird shutdown - how can we recover them or see them?

Thunderbird stopped responding and so I shut it down. Received error message about sending error details and declined. Restarted Thunderbird and it came up fine and can receive and send mail. However, all of our local folders are gone. We have tried to recover them using some articles from mozillaZinw but no luck so far. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
