I have Firefox Quantum 60.0.2 (64-bit) installed on Ubuntu (Linux MyPC 4.4.0-128-generic #154-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 25 14:15:18 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and the Awesome Bar doesn't work. Whenever I type something in the address bar the only thing that shows up is "Search for XYZ with ..." and then a bunch of search engine icons. There are no suggestions from open tabs, bookmarks or history though these are all checked in the Preferences. I also checked running Safe Mode but it still didn't work. I checked the behavior for both, NVIDIA and on-board Intel graphics, and there is no difference - it's not working in any way. Below are some screenshots that provide more information about the problem / settings. If you need more information I'm happy to provide them. I'd really love to get this feature working as it is super helpful.

Why are you using adblocker?

more options

Because it blocks ads. Why does it matter? I tried running in Safe Mode but this changed nothing.

Ya, that is what adblockers do. Your video Card Drivers are real, real, bad shape. Just about everything drivers are suppose to do is unsupported, unavailable or blocked.

Can copy/paste about 6inches of in if want on them if want.

Suggest reinstall your Video Card Drivers if Possible. It maybe a rendering problem I am not sure but regardless action needs to be done on your drivers.

May want to compile Firefox 61 to see if that makes a difference as well.

@Pkshadow Thanks for your answer. I have already latest drivers for Intel graphics installed:

$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done xserver-xorg-video-intel is already the newest version (2:2.99.917+git20160325-1ubuntu1.2). 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Also I tried with my NVIDIA graphics card (which has latest proprietary drivers) but it didn't work either. So why could the drivers be a problem then?

I will try your suggestion with Firefox 61, but you mentioned driver problems, so how could this work?

Edit

On Firefox 61.0 it is still not working.

Edit 2

I tried disabling Hardware Acceleration and WebGL as described here but it still doesn't work.

Edit 3

Here I found the data for NVIDIA activated (Awesome Bar still doesn't work): https://ufile.io/4rygq

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

@cor-el Okay I tried Verify Integrity and it seems that everything is alright. This is the output:

Maybe Important

I copied my Firefox profile over from an older computer in a sense that I just copied & pasted the profile folder on my new computer. On this new computer the Awesome Bar is not working. Maybe it is related to that fact? I will try to delete the databases now. Edit: After deleting the places.sqlite database files and restarting Firefox twice, they have been rebuilt. However Awesome Bar is still not working.

On a side note: I don't have any problems with Bookmarks, History, it's even suggesting visited URLs in the URL input field, but the Dropdown with 'all' suggestions is missing. It's also not suggesting open tabs, which should be independent of the databases, right? (I don't have sync of tabs enabled.)

Interestingly the Awesome Bar works with a freshly created profile. So indeed it seems to be a problem with the profile.

Edit

Okay so the solution for me was the following. Since I had synced my data with another device, I just created a new profile, I adjusted all the settings again (manually) and then synced the new profile with my other device to get the data back. Now with this new profile the Awesome Bar works as expected. Though I have no idea why it didn't work before.

By the way: What is the proper way of moving your profile from one computer to another? If just copying the profile folder breaks features such as Awesome Bar this probably requires more investigation.
