When I get this message, the program freezes for a minute or more. I have tried disabling all of my addons and hardware acceleration without any luck. I have tried starting in Safe Mode, but I don't get an internet connection in Safe Mode so I can't judge whether the problem is fixed. I have read the forums, but I don't find any other useful suggestions. I hope someone can help, because I am about to dump Thunderbird.

I am running Windows 10, but I alos had the problem on Windows 8. I am using Thunderbird version 38.3

If you mean computer 'Safe Mode' then obviously you cannot trest Thunderbird as it requires the internet to access server, download etc. So, you would need to use 'Safe mode with networking' option.

If you mean Thunderbird 'Safe Mode' then this would mean restarting with addons disabled. 'Help' > 'Restart with addons disabled'

Do you have a background process that could be running?

eg: Windows, Java etc auto install updates. This could cause a temporary not responding.

Do you have anti-virus software scanning your incoming and outgoing emails? If yes, then access your anti-virus/firewall program and switch off scanning emails to see if this improves the situation.

Even when using Safe Mode with Networking, I get no wireless connection in Safe Mode. I get "no connections available" even when there are active wireless signals.

Me too, and I have tried disabling all plugins and virus checker but still I often have to leave a message half typed or trying to read my email and come back minutes later to finish them
