When I am using FF to browse the internet and try to send an email, FF opens 1,000s of email windows and I can only exit by closing out the program. What's up?

When I am using FF to browse the internet and click on a webpage and read through it and get someplace where I want to CONTACT someone, i.e. write an email, I click on the email address on the webpage and then across the top rail, FF starts loaded email window tabs ... ad infinitum. I try to delete them and it doesn't work. The only way to escape is via closing out FF. We deleted FF from our Apps and downloaded a new version and the new version still had all our old bookmarks and the same problem when we tried to email from an address on a webpage. So.... what is going on?
