Only recently (over the last week or so) have I noticed that emails from one particular sender are consistently marked as Junk, with that orange symbol in the junk column. Even when I click on it to remove it, and/or click on "Not junk", the email becomes marked again as Junk within a few seconds/minute. I find this so strange. The sender is my mother, who has been emailing me for years! I just closed Thunderbird down after removing all the junk tags and have just re-opened it and all my emails from my mother since mid-May are all marked as junk.....this is ridiculous. How do I permanently remove the orange marker next to each email?

I am using Version 31.7.0

Just to add: the emails remain in the folder I created for my mother's mail-they aren't being moved to the Junk folder (Thunderbird is not moving them there)....and so I don't understand why they are arriving in my "mum's" folder and being marked by Tbird as junk.

Many thanks!

I assume your moving them to the mum folder using a filter. If Thunderbird side, that filter runs before junk clasification by default. If server side you would need to consult your mail provider.

Now Junk status should not occur if the address is in your address book. Is it? Secondly open one of the mail using CTRL+U look in the headers (the bit of code stuff before the message) for anything that says SPAM, or words with spam in them.

Copy and paste that part of the header to a reply here on the forum and perhaps we can work out what is happening.

Hi Matt-thanks a million for your reply to my posting.

I will only be able to look at the header tomorrow because I'm not with my PC today and I don't have Thunderbird on my Mac here.

Re: the address book; yes, the address is in the address book. Re: the filter...I haven't changed any rules or filters in months and yet the flagging of the messages as Junk is only recent; so my Q. is "how can this be a result of any filters if the rules/filters have been there pre-the problem existing"?

I need to check for sure whether the emails arrive in the Inbox and I then move them to my mum's folder, or whether they arrive directly in my mum's folder...I may need till Monday to test this but may be able to let you know tomorrow.

I will be back in touch....thanks again!

Hi Matt-I am pasting 2 separate headers below (in 2 separate response boxes); one is an email from me to my mother (I always bcc: myself into all emails) an another is to another recepient (not my mother, but this email was also marked Junk). I have removed the content of the email that is personal, as well as both email addresses. I don't see the words Spam in either email header, though there is reference to an error (SPF) in one of these email headers.

If you can make sense of any of this, I'd be grateful.

Matt-finally, and re-the filters: there are *no* filters on my mother's emails....they arrive in my Inbox and I then move them manually to her folder "mum's mail". I therefore don't think the filter theory holds here....her emails seem to be classified as Junk for no apparent reason.

I have even tried to highlight all emails in her folder, Mark as "Not Junk"....so then the orange junk symbol disappears, but as soon as I view a different folder, and then come back to hers....all the previous Junk emails are marked as Junk again...I just don't understand this.

There is filtering alright. Yahoo spam filtering.

X-YahooFilteredBulk: 65.20.0.12

This header indicates that yahoos spam filter considers the mail originating from the IP address shown is spam.

The ip address name is lb.lon5.cpcloud.co.uk an is apparently something to do with BT email. or at least I get that imprassion from this thread. It is a couple of years old, but exactly describes your problem really.

Basically you are going to have to contact Yahoo (or your mail provider if they are not yahoo) and ask them what their problem is. Looking over the two headers, both route through cpcloud.co.uk and it appears yahoo does not like that as all.

more options

Hi Matt-thanks very much for this. OK-so if the filter that is causing the problem is Yahoo, then it is mine, and not my mother's side....I use BT Yahoo Mail)-actually, it was BT Mail and they are now migrating us all over to BT Yahoo, which means nobody on their end seems to know what is going on:), at least, it's harder to get answers to questions. I checked my filters on my web based Mail (Yahoo Mail) and have removed all filters so I will see if the problem persists. What I don't understand is that even when I remove the Junk icon (mark all as not junk), they become re-labelled as Junk, in Thunderbird. Whereas, right now..I'm home and on my Macbook Air, and my Outlook for Mac mail programme does *not* flag any of these same emails as Junk. So it's something to do with the relationship between Tbird, and Yahoo maybe? Otherwise, why wouldn't these same emails be flagged as Junk in Outlook too?

Best regards, Marla

I am assuming, Oops

Your Thunderbird account will be imap. (it is the default where IMAP and POP are both offered) IMAP is synchronized to the server. Outlook plops for the older (by a year I think) POP protocol by choice. This downloads only the inbox and offers no synchronization.

But do check on both to be sure I am right because I really am only guessing.

more options

Hi Matt-yes, I have set up my account as IMAP (both of my email clients are set up as IMAP). I've also just emailed BT (my internet service provider) to see what they say about the filtering, etc.

I'll keep you posted if I get any sensible reply from them:).

Best of luck... I am sorry to point you to them, like all the big ISPs getting answers is like pulling teeth. But in this case they are the only ones that can provide an answer.

more options

Thanks Matt. At least I can feel safe in the knowledge that I'm able to send and receive...it's just annoying that there is some filtering going on that I have not set up myself, and is beyond my control. Will keep you posted. Thanks for all of your input thus far.

I did find the following instructions re Yahoo here

1. On your YahooMail page, click on the OPTIONS icon in the upper right area, (it looks like a gear wheel.)

2. On the drop-down menu, click on settings.

3. On the dialog box that shows up, click on "filters."

4. Click on the "add" button, top center of the box.

5. In the filter name box, name your new filter with a name of your choice. ("Stop Stupid Yahoo Spam Filter" comes to mind.)

6. In the box under "Sender" to the right of "contains" type the character "@" (without the quotes.)

7. Make sure the box at the bottom, to the right of: "then deliver the email to the following folder" reads: "INBOX"

8. Click on the "SAVE" button to save your new filter.

I have not tried it, but it may well work as there are lots of repeats of basically the same information on the web. Just nothing from Yahoo. I assume basically the same web interface will exist for BT customers as original Yahoo web mail people.

more options

Thanks Matt. So can I just check with you; is the purpose of setting up this new filter, so that my service provider knows to allow *all* emails in by way of setting the "@" (because every legitimate email address contains a "@") or have I misunderstood the purpose of this exercise?

Best regards, Marla

more options

I really do not understand it, but your reasoning is sound. All I really know is it is offered up in slightly different ways over and over again. This whole issue your having has me just a little confused. This is the first I have ever heard of email in folders other than the inbox being flagged as junk, by any system.

Does your anti virus have a spam tool at all. Perhaps we are off base on what is flagging the mail over and over again.

more options

Thanks Matt-I'll check my anti virus when I get to work.

I have a planned phone call with BT this morning so I'll let you know what they say. I'm also getting Server error problems in my Outlook for Mac email client, so they've got a lot to deal with on their end:).

Best regards, Marla

more options

might be almost off topic. But what are they? Those server errors.

more options

Hi Matt-I've just checked my anti virus (AVAST) and my email scan feature is turned off. I had turned it off months ago because I thought it was causing other problems, so I don't think my anti virus is effecting my email filter feature.

One of the error message in Outlook for Mac are: "Outlook cannot find the Server. Verify that the Server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings...".

Error code: 3170

I am getting a couple of others too; I'll discuss these with BT and see what they say. None of them make sense to me.

I am confident that my server settings are all correct but I will look at this with BT when they phone me shortly.

Incidentally, re-my Junk problem: in my web based Yahoo mail....my mother's emails are *not* being marked as Junk/Spam and so does this not throw up another connundrum and suggest it could be Thunderbird related? Surely, if the filtering in Yahoo was causing this problem, would it not logically follow that these same emails would also get put in Junk/marked as Junk in the web based mail programme *as well as* in Thunderbird?

Best regards, Marla

OK-so I've just sent myself an email (from the same email account to the same email account and this arrived in my Inbox (in Thunderbird), marked as Junk!. How can this be when the sender is *me*? Help:)

more options

Hi Matt-you're probably asleep, but just to say.....I've been on the phone with BT for over an hour, and though I think I've got to the bottom of my server dropping out problem (my home BB speed is slow, and when I trialled sending and receiving mail from work all worked well), re-my Thunderbird issue...the BT guy has been racking his brain and checking all my settings because every email that I send to myself, or that comes in to me from my mother...is marked Junk, even though it doesn't go into the Junk folder...it goes into the Inbox (I think because my settings tell it to), but as soon as we mark it "not junk"...it turns to junk again. Most bizarre.

I am quite certain the issue lies somewhere within my Tbird settings (which this guy is not that familiar with)-I say this because when I log into my web based BT Yahoo mail.....these same emails that are giving me problems in Tbird...are not being marked as junk in the web based mail, nor are they going into my Junk folder. Also, I am not having the same problem in Outlook for Mac...these emails are not being marked as Junk in Outlook either.

We agreed to end the call as he thinks this is more a Thunderbird issue due to the fact that I am not getting the same emails (or any emails) marked as Junk, in Outlook/my web based mail.

Help:). I'm slowing losing my mind....

Best regards, Marla
