I am running FireFox 50.1.0 on Ubuntu 16.04. Some times when I am asked to input text, if I press SHIFT+[letter], the text input stops. I have observed this mainly when adding a bookmark by pressing CTRL+D; I am unable to name my bookmarks with capital letters unless I substitute CapsLock to type the capitals. When I press SHIFT+[letter], the bookmark pop-up disappears and no changes are made. I have also observed it while using Google Sheets; a similar event occurs when trying to rename a sheet. Typing in lowercase letters is fine. It only happens when SHIFT is pressed. Thanks in advanced!

It is possible that some of the status keys have the wrong state and Firefox sees them as still pressed.

Try to press all the status keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) a few times to see if that helps to recover from this. If it doesn't help then close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
