When saving pages to Pocket in Firefox, you must be logged into the Pocket website. If you've changed your default browsing settings or installed an extension that automatically clears your cookies, you might find that you're asked to log into Pocket every time you try to save a page. Continue reading for several possible solutions.

  • If you are always asked to log in to Pocket when you want to view your Pocket list of saved pages, also read the How to fix Pocket login issues article.

Keep cookies when Firefox closes

If you have set Firefox to clear your history when Firefox closes, Pocket will require that you log in each time you open Firefox and try to save a page.

Note: To learn more about Firefox history, see Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox.

Here's how to tell Firefox to remember your cookies when you close your browser:

  1. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. In the History section, if the drop-down menu is set to Use custom settings for history and the box next to Clear history when Firefox closes is checked, click Settings…
  4. Uncheck Cookies.

After making this change, try again to save a page to Pocket. You will be asked to log in one more time.

Add an Exception for Pocket when Firefox is set to “Never remember history”

Pocket relies on cookies to keep you logged in and to save pages to your Pocket account. If your Firefox Privacy settings are set to Never remember history, no cookies will be saved, and Pocket will ask you to log in each time you try to save to Pocket.

Note: To learn more about setting Firefox to never remember history, see Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history.

The easiest way to fix this issue is to customize your history settings and add an exception so that Pocket is allowed to store a cookie in your Firefox browser. Here's how:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your macOS version.Click the menu button Fx89menuButton and select Settings.
  3. Select Privacy & Security.
  4. In the History section drop-down menu, select Use custom settings for history.
  5. Uncheck Always use private browsing mode.
  6. In the Cookies and Site Data section, click the Manage Exceptions… button.
  7. Enter https://getpocket.com in the Address of website field, and click the Allow button.
  8. Click Save Changes.

After making these changes, please try to save to Pocket again. You will be asked to log in one more time.

Disable First Party Isolation

First Party Isolation is an advanced browser setting that restricts access to cookies, cache and other data to the domain that created it. When First Party Isolation is enabled, it prevents the Pocket add-on from logging in successfully.

Warning: Changing advanced preferences can affect Firefox's stability and security. This is recommended for advanced users only.

Here's how to check to see if First Party Isolation is enabled, and how to turn it off:

  1. Type about:config in the address bar and press EnterReturn.
A warning page may appear. Click Accept the Risk and Continue to go to the about:config page.
  2. In the search bar, type or copy and paste the following text: privacy.firstparty.isolate
  3. If this preference is set to true, click the Toggle Fx71aboutconfig-ToggleButton button next to this preference to change its value to false.
Note: There is a Firefox add-on called First Party Isolation, which automatically enables this feature. If this add-on is installed in your browser, it must be disabled or uninstalled to turn off First Party Isolation.

Manually Save to Pocket via the Pocket website

If you prefer not to adjust your privacy settings, you can still use Pocket and save links directly to your list as an alternative to using the Pocket toolbar button. You can click the + button in the top toolbar of the Pocket website. To learn more, see Saving to Pocket manually.
