I am able to connect my gmail account to the Google Talk network, but once I click open the "chat" tab and click "Show chat status" it keeps saying "Error: The server closed the connection. Reconnection in 4...3...2...1... seconds". And it never connects. What can I do? Screen shot attached.

This was reported as a Thunderbird bug several months ago, and thought to have been fixed. Are you using the latest version of Thunderbird?

Yes, I am using the latest version. I tried again today. No luck.

perhaps your firewall/anti virus has blocked the chat ports or Thunderbird chat entirely. Try restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates
