Thunderbird is no longer downloading mail from the server automatically. The only way I can get messages from the server is to close down Thunderbird then reopen it. It recently started doing this and all of the server settings are as they should be. Please help.

No surprise then. There have been several posts in the last few days reporting this problem. Please open your error console (ctrl+shift+j), clear it and then try to get new messages manually. Look in the error console again: does it say 'mobile.charter.net does not support RFC 5746'? If you google that error code you'll find that it relates to a security vulnerability. To check that, you could try temporarily changing the security settings for the account to 'none': does it connect then? In any case it looks as though the Charter mail server does not have the level of security that Thunderbird expects. I'd suggest you talk to Charter about it: quote the error message to them (if you get it, of course) and see what they make of it.

Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes. It may be some time though as I'm dealing with car problems too. Thanks again!
