For some while Thunderbird has been running very slow at times, and I have identified the main culprit. When an incoming email is downloading it stops working altogether.... anything I am doing, like typing an email, stops completely until the download has finished, then it resumes. This is becoming very timeconsuming, is there an answer?

It sounds like you have an anti-virus product scanning.

Suggest you stop AV from scanning:

  • any Thunderbird file or folder
  • incoming and outgoing mail

Thanks for that, Toad Hall, but I tried it and it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Also, would not that negate the reason for having AV in place at all..... wouldn't it lay my computer open to viruses? Cheers, Peter

Here is some info you can read regarding AV and emails. Please note, thunderbird by default does not allow remote content; it does not auto select to Display attachments inline and it does not auto click on links. All of those actions are performed by you. Simply opening an email does not activate anything. If you use AV to scan your Thunderbird files then make sure you have it set to ask you what to do rather than auto fixing because you are likely to lose an entire file and not just one email. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Email_scanning_-_pros_and_cons http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Anti-virus_Software
