I have to right click, and click on spellcheck for it to work every time. It doesn't automatically check as I type.

I have "check spelling as you type" checked in options.

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the I Accept the Risk button. At the top of the screen is a search bar.

Type: layout.spellcheckDefault Its values are; 0 Spell Checker Off 1 Check Only Multi-Line Input Boxes. 2 Check Multi And Single Line Input Boxes.

Also, check the spellchecker.dictionary entry.

Does this also happen on this forum in the text area you use to post a reply?

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages sub menu. At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.

  • open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.

The spelling checker is enabled if [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a checkmark.

I've tried setting spellcheckdefault to 2, makes no difference.

After looking into it further, it's kind of random as to where it works and it doesn't. It does work automatically in this text box, It won't automatically work in like a search box, or certain websites.

I have english and french dictionaries installed, it does the same for both. Like I said, when it isn't working then I have to manual right click and click on spellchecking, then it works fine, but it's highly annoying that I have to do that every single time. Like if i open a search page, type something in, then I have to manual right click and turn it on. If I open another search page later, I have to do the same thing again for it to work.

Hello MondoMolesto,

This may only be partially relevant, but Google uses its own
spell checker, e.g. in Gmail  :

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7987?hl=en

more options

I don't use google or gmail.

I had it working in my search engine for a little while after goofing around with a few settings, not sure which did it, but it went right back to not working.

It basically just decides to work or not work randomly, with no real constancy.

Most search engines (or maybe even all of them) use their own spell checker - you don't mention which search engine you use, but maybe you could check with their support ?

Unless of course this problem does not only occur when you use your search engine (?)

more options

No, it does not only occur when i use a search engine. Like I said, It happens on other websites, search engines, etc, with no real pattern.

Sorry; as the word "search" came up many times, I was kind of hoping this would turn out to be a search engine problem.

Maybe go over cor-el's post again, and see if maybe you missed something ?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Also, may I suggest;

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/grammarly-1 Grammarly for Firefox

Grammarly will help you communicate more effectively. As you type, Grammarly flags mistakes and helps you make sure your messages, documents, and social media posts are clear, mistake-free, and impactful.

No, it makes no difference if I start in the safe mode, acts the same way.

Stab in the dark, but would you check to see if they need to be updated ?
