I saved my favourites (backed-up) as per your instructions on desktop as a .json file.

When I tried opening to check it, Windows said it cannot open the file cos it needs to know what program I want to use to open it and gave options of using the web to auto select or choose from list of programs. I dont know what to do.

Note that you can restore a JSON backup in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File

Restoring a JSON backup will replace all current bookmarks.

You can open such a JSON file in the Scratchpad (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) if you want to look at the file.
Use File > Open File in the Scratchpad and click the Pretty Print button to format the text for easier inspection.

The JSON format is data meant to be read by Firefox when you choose to restore that backup. It's not intended to be human-readable, although you can read it with a little difficulty...

If you want to see the data, you can either open it in Notepad (within Notepad, use File > Open, and choose all file types), or you can drag and drop the file onto an open Firefox tab.
