When I click an email link I see

Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use a different profile.

The question here is why is it still running and not responding?

It sounds like something is causing the application to hang when you exit. Please check in task manager to see if there is already a process running before you click the link. That will at least start the diagnostic process as to what is happening.
