Then, if the mouse pointer is kept still for more that 2 to 3 seconds the page freezes until you move the mouse again. So I have to be constantly moving the mouse to get a site to load - sigh!

Note: This doesn't happen with Internet Explorer 9, which I still have installed until I'm convinced Firefox is 'the way ahead'! So far, I'm not too sure.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Sorry cor-el, the fault is still present in Safe Mode & the links you and the Safe Mode page suggest haven't helped either.  :-(

Thanks for trying though.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Thanks cor-el for your help last October and sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I tried everything you recommended, without success and lived with the problem until last w/e.

Then I thought I couldn't be doing with having to keep the mouse moving just to load web pages & links within them. So I brought IE9 off the subs bench - tools - internet options - advanced - restore advanced settings and Hey Presto! it now works fine.

So Mozilla Firefox has been uninstalled, never to darken my door again!

Regards

Note that such issues can be caused by malware on your computer.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Doing all of the above seemed a bit daunting, so I've started by doing a Full Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials which I already have as a programme. It took hours, but came up with these two malware nasties:-

Exploit:Java/CVE-2013-0422 VirTool:Win32/CeeInject.FV

Both have been removed.
