Why does the Yahoo search page open when I enter a valid, working url?

Over the last several weeks, there have been numerous times that I enter a valid, working website (it works on Chrome and other browsers), but I get an error message saying it is not a valid address and I am re-directed to a Yahoo search page.

Hmm, sounds like an add-on has taken over the normal operation of the address bar. Possibly Spigot? For Spigot, there's a tiny "Learn More" at the bottom of the Yahoo results page for bad addresses which leads to a page on how to disable this feature. If you find that, I would try to get rid of the extension completely.

Likely it can be found on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

Any luck?
