When Firefox updated to 29.01 the downloads and home buttons disappeared from my top bar. I found how to bring them back using the customize function, but whenever I close Firefox and reopen, they're gone again.

Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:

  • Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole

If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.

No, restarting in safe mode made no difference. When I restart the browser, the buttons are gone.

You can check for problems with preferences.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

Found 11 prefs js files and deleted them. Made no difference in behavior. Buttons are gone when I restart.

Do you keep the browser.uiCustomization.state pref?

You can also delete the localstore.rdf file in the profile folder in case that is interfering.
