Why did my normal connections with TWC roadrunner email stop working?

My Thunderbird access to roadrunner has been working fine for years on my MACbook. But for the past day or so when I use Thunderbird to log into my TWC roadrunner email, I get various error messages. I can use Firefox to log directly into mail.twc.com using my normal password. But still can't get there with Thunderbird. TWC's help desk says I need to change my Thunderbird settings to "mail.twc.com" for incoming messages and the same thing for outgoing messages and use port 143 for incoming and 587 for outgoing, in each case using my full email address. My efforts at making these changes has not solved the problem. Any suggestions? (P.S. My iPad can get and receive emails, but that's of course not through Thunderbird.)
